CEM Quarantine What to Expect

Our mission at Miller & Associates is to make your mare’s stay in quarantine a healthy, happy and calm experience.

Owners have the choice of a 16-day Expedited Stay quarantine period or a 21-day Regular Stay quarantine period.

Expedited Stay

The Expedited Stay is a shorter version of the typical 21-day stay. After your mare arrives, she has a blood sample taken to test for antibodies to the bacterium that causes contagious equine metritis, Taylorella equigenitalis. Two swabs of the mare’s genitalia are performed and sent to the lab for culturing, this is considered the ‘Culture Phase’. Three negative cultures are required prior to discharge. During the Expedited Stay, the ‘Treatment Phase’ begins on the fourth day after the third culture is performed. Treatment consists of the mare’s vagina being cleaned with a 4% Chlorhexidine Gluconate® scrub and packed for 5 days with 0.2% Nitrofurazone® ointment. On the afternoon of the fifth day of treatment, the third and final culture results will be available. If this third culture is negative, the mare is able to be discharged.

There is some risk in choosing the Expedited Stay. If there is an overgrowth or contamination of any of the cultures, the mare will be required to stay an additional 37 days at the Miller & Associates CEM facility at the expense of the owner. This 37 day period is comprised of a 21 day rest period followed by a repeat of the 16 day culturing and treatment protocol.

Regular Stay

The Regular Stay consists of a 21-day period during which the ‘Culture Phase’ is completed prior to the start of the ‘Treatment Phase’. Upon arrival, your mare will have a blood sample taken to test for antibodies to the bacterium that causes contagious equine metritis, Taylorella equigenitalis. The ‘Culture Phase’ starts upon arrival; it takes 7 days for culture results to come back, with 3 negative cultures, each 72 hours apart, required before the mare starts the treatment phase. The ‘Culture Phase’ is typically 14 days in length.
Once the final negative culture result has been received, the mare’s vagina is cleaned with a 4% Chlorhexidine Gluconate® scrub and packed for 5 days with 0.2% Nitrofurazone® ointment. This constitutes the final phase of the stay and is considered the ‘Treatment Phase’.

During all phases of quarantine your mare will be hand walked and groomed by our professional staff.
We encourage owners and their agents to visit their horses while staying with us.
Visiting and riding hours are from 9:00am – 2:00pm Tuesday through Friday and 8:30am – 12:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
We ask that you call ahead to schedule your visit and don’t forget to check in at the office front desk!!
